NATO's top military commander has declared that the alliance is prepared to respond immediately if attacked, amid European concerns about sabotage, drone incursions and possible Russian military provocations.

Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on October 12, U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, emphasized the alliance's ability to coordinate air, land and maritime forces in response to an attack.

However, he stressed that war is neither imminent nor inevitable and highlighted the importance of maintaining communication to prevent misunderstandings.

European officials have raised concerns about covert operations and threats to infrastructure, while several NATO members are strengthening their defenses against drones and unconventional attacks.

Why it matters: NATO's greatest challenge may be identifying when a limited provocation becomes a serious security threat—and responding effectively without allowing a confrontation to escalate into a wider European conflict.
